Overview
As a key cultural initiative for Emery Sapp & Sons (ESS), a Midwest-based infrastructure construction company, I led the design development of the Safety Coin—a tangible reminder of our commitment to safety, quality, and well-being. Designed to be carried at all times, the coin reinforces protecting ourselves and our teams, executing work with excellence, and ensuring everyone returns home safely to their loved ones. This project not only strengthened our safety culture but also fostered a shared sense of responsibility across the organization.
The design of the Safety Coin embodies ESS’s core values—People, Purpose, Partnership, Passion, and Performance—which are prominently featured as a constant reminder of what drives our work. At the center of the coin is a long-standing safety symbol that has been used throughout our company’s history, representing the efficiency and timeliness essential to a strong safety culture.
spreading the word
To ensure the Safety Coin was effectively announced, a comprehensive communication and distribution campaign was implemented. The rollout included a two-email plus texts sequence: the first email announced the coin’s significance, tying it to our company’s safety culture and core values, while the second reinforced its importance with personal stories and a reminder to always carry it. To make the delivery personal and impactful, supervisors were equipped with talking points, ensuring they could clearly articulate the coin’s purpose and emphasize its role in daily safety practices. This thoughtful approach ensured that every team member received the coin with a full understanding of its significance, reinforcing our collective responsibility.
